Biographical Notes
Woody Carter is a narrative theologian, public speaker, and writer who has earned a doctorate in theology, religion, and the arts from the Graduate Theological Union, in Berkeley, Ca.
Carter has served as an associate professor in the Bachelor of Arts Completion Program at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, and an instructor in theater arts at several Bay Area community colleges. He taught courses on mysticism and social change; produced a documentary film entitled “The Healing Circle,” integrating the practice of “quiet sitting” with cognitive behavior therapy for young men released from incarceration, and facilitated meditation circles at San Quentin prison and in the Oakland, CA. community.
He is a retired executive director of the Bay Area Black United Fund, an identity-based philanthropy in Oakland, California, and the author of two published works: a novel entitled, “Narada’s Children: A Visionary Tale of Two Cities,”(available on Amazon.com) and a non-fiction work, “Theology for a Violent Age: Religious Beliefs Crippling African-American Youth,” for academic readers. He resides with his wife, Lamai, in the Washington DC area.
